The Hume Society

Stimulating Scholarship on the Writings of David Hume

Policy on Advertising

  1. The Hume Society may from time to time advertise various events, publications, goods, services, and websites, whether commercial or non-commercial, through its journal, Hume Studies, or by direct mailing to its members, through its website, or by means of its electronic post lists.
  2. The Hume Society and Hume Studies, through its designated officers, may refuse to accept any proposed advertisement for any reason.
  3. The membership list of the Hume Society, which is kept and managed by the Society’s Secretary-Treasurer, shall under no circumstances be made available to other parties, whether within or without the Hume Society, for publicity or advertising purposes.
  4. The acceptance of advertisements by Hume Studies must be consistent with the stated advertising policy of the Hume Society but is otherwise at the sole discretion of the editor(s) of the journal.
  5. The acceptance of advertisements by the Hume Society for its publications other than in Hume Studies must be consistent with the stated advertising policy of the Hume Society but is otherwise at the sole discretion of the Secretary-Treasurer of the Society.
  6. In any case where the editor(s) of Hume Studies or the Secretary-Treasurer of the Hume Society are in doubt about the propriety of a proposed advertisement which there might otherwise be reason to publish through the Society, the relevant officer(s) shall consult with the Executive Committee of the Society through the Society’s President.
  7. All advertisements published through the media of the Hume Society should be of a kind which would presumably be of special interest to members of the Hume Society.
  8. The Hume Society rejects as unethical all forms of discrimination based on race, color, religion, political convictions, national origin, sex, disability, sexual orientation, gender identification or age. Accordingly, advertising through the media of the Hume Society will not be accepted from parties who do not comply with both the letter and spirit of this commitment.
  9. A fee schedule for advertising through Hume Studies will be set, and may be changed from time to time, by the editor(s) of Hume Studies. This fee schedule, and any changes in the fee schedule, will be transmitted to the Executive Committee through the Society’s Secretary-Treasurer.
  10. A fee schedule for advertising through for Hume Society media other than Hume Studies will be set, and changed from time to time, by the Society’s Secretary-Treasurer, subject to the approval of the Executive Committee.
  11. The fee schedules set according to provisions (9) and (10) may allow for differential fees to be set for different kinds of advertisement; for instance commercial firms or commercial offers may be charged for at different rates than non-commercial firms or non-commercial offers. In certain cases, advertisements may be published free of charge through the media of the Hume Society.
  12. The Secretary-Treasurer may establish web links on the Society’s home page or may transmit publicly available notices, including advertisements, through the Society’s electronic post lists without notification to the authors or originators of the posted or publicly available material and, of course, without charge to them. All material thus transmitted shall be consistent with the stated advertising policy of the Hume Society.

This policy was adopted by the Executive Committee of the Hume Society, February 20, 2002.
